Ear Flap Cap in Yoshie Yarn

This hat is knit flat from the top down and sewn up the back when finished.


MATERIALS: 2 skeins Yoshie yarn (70m per 50 g) from Naturally 80% wool 20% arcrylic, 5.5 mm needles, 2 double point 5.5 mm needles for making i-cord ties
GAUGE: 4 sts per inch
ABBREVIATIONS: M1 (make one) on k side - insert left needle from front to back under strand between last st knitted and 1st st on left needle. Knit, twisting strand by working into loop at back of needle. On purl row - insert left needle from front to back under strand between last st worked & 1st st on left needle. Purl, twisting strand by working into loop at back of needle from left to right.
SSK (left slanting decrease) - slip 2 sts separately to right needle as if to knit. Slip left needle into these 2 sts from left to right and knit them tog.

Cast on 8 sts. Knit one row.
Row 2: P1, M1, repfrom * to last 2 sts, p2, 14 sts
Row 3: K2, *M1, k2; rep from * -20 sts
Row 4: *P3, M1,; rep from *to last 2 sts, p2 – 26 sts
Row 5: K2, *M1, k4; rep from * -32 sts
Row 6: *P5, M1; rep from * to last 2 sts, p2 – 38 sts
Row 7: k2, *M1, k6; rep from * -44 sts
Rows 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18 purl
Row 9: K2, *M1, k7; rep from * -50 sts
Row 11: K2, *M1, k8; rep from * -56 sts
Row 13: K2, *M1, k9; rep from * -62 sts
Row 15: K2, *M1, k10; rep from * - 68 sts
Row 17: K2, *M1, k 11; rep from * - 74 sts
Row 19: K2, * M1, k 12; rep from * - 80 sts
Work even in stocking stitch (knit on right side, purl on wrong side till hat from top measures 7 ½ inches.
Next row: BO 10 sts, k18 for ear flap, BO center 24 sts, k 18 for ear flap, bind off last 10 sts. Break yarn leaving a tail long enough to sew up back seam.
Ear flaps: With wrong side facing, join yarn at beg of ear flap sts and work 7 rows of stocking st on the 18 sts.
Row 8: k1, ssk, knit to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1 – 16 sts
Row 9: Purl
Repeat the last 2 rows until 4 sts remain. Put these 4 sts on double point needles and work I cord for 5 to 6 inches. Break yarn, thread through sts and darn end up into the cord.

Repeat for other earflap

With a darning needle sew back seam and weave in loose ends.
