October 2007: Twist Stitch Scarf

Yarn for this sample: Sea Wool by the Fleece Artist
Cast on 3 sts. Turn. Knit. Turn.
Row 1: k1, p1, increasing 1 st. at beginning and end of row. Turn.
Row 2: k1, p1. (Knit the purl stitches and purl the knit stitches). Turn. - this is the seed/moss stitch; always check that you have a knit stitch above a purl stitch and so on.
Repeat rows 1 and 2 until you have 13 sts on your needle, ending with row 2.

Next row: k1, *insert right needle into next st. and wind the yarn around both needles and then round the left needle and knit through both loops. Repeat from * to last stitch, k1. (This is the twist stitch).
Next row: k1, then k1, p1 across row to last stitch, k1.
Continue with rows 1 and 2 until you have 23 sts. on your needle ending with row 2.
Next row: k1, knit twist stitch across row to last st., k1.
Next row: k1, then k1, p1 across row to last st., k1.

Continue with rows 1 and 2 until you have 31 sts. on your needle.
Repeat the twist stitch row and its next row.

Vary the number rows in between the twist row. This will produce a lacy effect. Knit the scarf as long as you wish saving enough to do the decreases for the point at the other end.

I have added a tassel, so if that is needed at each end I suggest that you cut the yarn lengths before you begin knitting so that you will have enough yarn.

Always begin and end each row with a knit stitch regardless of pattern. This makes a neat edge.

I also found it useful to place a marker on the row 1 side; you can lose track!
