March 2013 - Eyelet Cable Rib

Are you tired of the same old boring ribbing on your socks, gloves, mittens or sweaters? This is a pattern I have used on socks before and found to be a great substitute for ribbing. It is interesting in appearance and fun to knit. It is a multiple of 5 stitches so if you normally use 64 stitches for socks, just cast on 65 then decrease to 64 when you start the leg.

The pattern is a 4 row repeat.

Round 1 and 2 : *k3, P2* repeat to end of round
Round 3: * slip 1, k2, pass slipped stitch over both knitted stitches, p2* repeat from * to * to end of round.
Round 4: * K1, YO, K1, P2* repeat from * to * to end of round.

It’s just that simple! You can continue for the leg of the sock if you wish.
