Blocking Tips

Our Stitch of the Month for January is really more of a hint or tip. One of the best things about working at "Have a Yarn" (and there are many!) is the people that we meet and get to know. From these folks, we learn a great deal about knitting and sometimes get tips just too good not to share. This one comes from Tammy Cushing, a long time customer (and beautiful knitter I might add).
She told me about a "best ever" Christmas gift last year of foam interlocking blocks that are usually used to cover floor space for children to play on. She has an ingenious use for them - as blocking boards! They store away neatly and can be conformed to make many different shapes suitable to the work that we block.
I rushed right out and bought some of course and have taken a few photos to demonstrate the idea.
The only drawback which Tammy has found is that the thickness of the foam is not equal to the length of her blocking pins. That is easily dealt with by laying the foam on an bed, folded towels or a carpeted floor.
Thanks to Tammy for sharing this tip and anyone else that has one to share, please let us know! --Heather Tunnah

Another Method of Blocking your knitted project...

This method I find very good for projects of all kinds. The knitting is not over-stretched and smoothing it into shape is very easy.
METHOD.
Wet a large towel or towels to cover your knitting. Do this either from the tap or through the rinse and spin cycle in your washing machine (I did it from the tap and gave the towel a good wringing).
Spread your project on the towel/s so that it is flat with no wrinkles and approximately the finished dimensions.
Roll up the towel, put into a plastic bag and leave overnight.
Unroll the towel/s and your will find the knitting is well dampened all the way through.
Gently pull to the finished dimensions and let air dry thoroughly. --Anne Morison
