Manos del Uruguay
We are thrilled to have Manos del Uruguay back on our shelves! This member of the World Fair Trade Organization employs 250 craftswomen throughout Uruguay allowing them to live and work in their home communities. We currently have 5 colours of Maxima, 9 colours of Wool Classica, and 6 colours of Wool Classica Naturals. For any admirers who wonder, what can I do with it, a quick search on Ravelry brings up over 16 000 projects in Wool Classica and nearly 2900 projects in Maxima. While the colours alone would convert anyone to this socially responsible brand, it’s the setup and history of the organization that makes it special.

We, the craftswomen, are the owners of Manos del Uruguay, and we are part of a non-profit Association, the objective of which is to generate work for rural women, allowing us to stay in our towns, earn our living and develop ourselves as human beings. - from www.manos.com.uy Each craftswoman is a part owner of the co-operative and works at one of 19 locations around the interior of the country. Like many countries around the world - including our own - Uruguay is experiencing increased urbanization. Working with Manos del Uruguay allows craftswomen to live in their home communities with meaningful, skilled employment.
