Take a stab at the fascinating technique of double layer knitting! Learn to double knit with one and two colours, knit and purl with both hands, and do double knitting decreases. Come try what everyone's talking about!

Introduction to Sock Knitting - $50
Saturday, November 1, 2014 - 10:30 am to 4:30 pm (including a lunch break)
Have a Yarn is a haven for sock knitters looking for a colourful stock of sock yarn. This day-long class will guide you through the steps of knitting a basic cuff down sock including long-tail cast on, heel flap and heel turn, picking up gusset stitches, and the star toe.

Saturday, November 15, 2014 - 10am to 1pm
Double Up & Around
Intermediate/experienced knitters - no DK experience necessary
Make an exploratory journey into the other realms of Double Knitting (which produces two-layer fabrics). We will begin with tubes within tubes, worked in the round, initially with single yarn, two yarns and then with colour patterning. We will look at different ways to handle the yarns for maximum efficiency and how to incorporate shaping into double fabrics, topped off with tubular bind-off. These techniques are suited to ultra warm mittens and cozy lined socks.

Double Knitting for the Addicted
Advanced (X rated, must have prior DK experience)
Take your double knitting to new levels with delightful side-opening pockets with vertical or diagonal edges. Use of double yarn to make subtle containment spaces. How to plan, chart and work different designs on both sides of the fabric. Horizontal/vertical patterning with slip stitches. Turning a heel into a DK sole fabric.

Sunday, November 16, 2014 - 10am to 1pm
Gilding the Lily: Advanced Finishing Techniques
Intermediate upwards - must have a working knowledge of grafting (Kitchener Stitch) and Mattress Stitch as these will not be covered in detail
Great knitting is a sum of small parts. We will be looking at a variety of refinements to the detailing and finishing of your pieces. We will use an easy provisional cast-on technique, work a facing, incorporate a selection of turning rows and fuse the facing to the main fabric. Preparation will be made for a seam involving no bulk or fabric loss, make an impeccable double-knit pocket and trim it with a choice of decorative pocket tops. All of this will be topped with a modified bind off technique which improves ease, speed and adds elasticity to the bound off edge.

A Phoenix from the Ashes: Rescue Techniques
Intermediate upwards - Must have some knowledge of fundamental techniques: laddering back, knitting down, duplicate stitch, mattress stitch, and grafting.
Never say die! Explore ways to practice defensive knitting by anticipating difficulties. The following techniques will be practised, converting knits to purls, correcting cables (near the needle and way back). Grafting uneven numbers of stitches together. Surgical replacements of rows, colour blocks, and sections. Sew and cut using crochet to secure the edges. Attaching replacement lower edges. Lace corrections. Gussets and other metamorphoses.

Take your knitting to the next level with a few finishing and pre-finishing techniques! Topics to be covered include: knitting to gauge, sewing seams, weaving in ends, blocking, shaping shoulders with short rows, three needle bind off and more!

One Day Knit-A-Long - $30
Saturday, November 29, 2014 - 10:30am to 3:30pm (including lunch break)
Meet Beans the Cat! This plump little cat is quick and easy to make. Makes a great kids' toy or filled with wool or cat nip makes a fun cat toy. Techniques to be covered include: using DPNs, increases (knit in front and back of stitch), i-cord, hand sewing, and more.
Materials needed: 4mm double pointed needles (or long circular for magic loop if preferred)

A Weekend with Lucy Neatby

We were lucky to have Lucy Neatby at Have a Yarn for the weekend on November 15 &16, 2014

Saturday morning was Double Up & Around for people interested in learning double knitting. Then in the afternoon the experienced double knitters got their turn in Double Knitting for the Addicted. Sunday morning was focused on finishing techniques in Gilding the Lily and the afternoon was rescue techniques in A Phoenix from the Ashes.



Handmaiden Meet & Greet and Yarn Tasting

Thanks to everyone who came to our Handmaiden Meet & Greet and Yarn Tasting! We had a fabulous afternoon of sampling yarns and talking fibre and colour. A very special thanks to Jana from Handmaiden for joining us here on a Sunday afternoon and sharing her beautiful yarn with us.

It was wonderful to see so many people at the shop on a sunny Sunday!
Each cup in the Yarn Tasting had a small ball of Handmaiden or Fleece Artist yarn and needles in it for customers to sample knit with.
Many yarns were sold by the 100g to make for excellent savings.
